HOUGHTON — State COVID-19 data Tuesday showed virus activity held relatively steady in the Copper Country in the past week.
Houghton County had 21 confirmed positives since Dec. 6, one fewer case than a week ago. Baraga County had 17 new confirmed positives, up three from the previous week, while Keweenaw County had only one new case reported. None of the counties recorded a new death blamed on COVID-19.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday added 280 confirmed positives since Dec. 6 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 54 in Marquette County, 44 in Dickinson County, 42 in Menominee County, 37 in Delta County, 21 in Houghton and Gogebic counties, 18 in Iron County, 17 in Baraga County, 11 in Schoolcraft County, seven in Chippewa County, three in Ontonagon County, two in Alger and Mackinac counties and one in Keweenaw County.
The state listed three confirmed virus-related deaths in Delta County and one in Dickinson, Marquette, Ontonagon and Chippewa counties; Menominee County’s toll was reduced by one.
Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 62,036 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 950 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 575 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 14 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 762 confirmed cases and 874 probable, 16 confirmed deaths and four probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,166 confirmed, 138 probable and 41 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,259 confirmed, 817 probable and eight deaths, nine probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,335 confirmed cases and 816 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,929 confirmed cases and 983 probable, 33 deaths and five probable; Baraga County, 2,065 confirmed cases, 440 probable and 56 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,037 confirmed cases and 396 probable, 82 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,491 confirmed cases and 667 probable, 44 deaths and 32 probable; Chippewa County, 4,086 confirmed cases and 5,947 probable, and 97 deaths, 19 probable; Menominee County, 4,722 confirmed cases, 2,130 probable and 64 deaths, 13 probable; Dickinson County, 6,095 confirmed cases and 3,075 probable, 101 deaths and 24 probable; Houghton County, 8,118 confirmed cases, 1,231 probable, 93 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 8,933 confirmed cases and 3,173 probable, 143 deaths and 35 probable; and Marquette County, 14,463 confirmed cases, 4,042 probable and 144 deaths, 17 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
The MDHHS on Tuesday had 13,043 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Dec. 6, or an average of about 1,863 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 2,963,404 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since Dec. 6 added 181 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 40,508.
